I had a really exciting opportunity to photograph Catherine, who wrote a really cool book and is now looking to be published. In her own words she says :
Community 92 is a work of apocalyptic speculative fiction. It takes place in world that “could be,” on a day like tomorrow. Speculative fiction is a wide genre that has long been dominated by male-focused storytelling. However, apocalypse-themed speculative fiction for women is growing with works like Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, Edan Lepucki’s California, and Claire Vaye Watkin’s Gold Fame Citrus. In addition, Jean Hegland’s 1998 apocalypse-themed novel Into the Forest was recently developed into a movie (yay!) starring Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood.
Consumers are excited about woman-driven speculative fiction, and Community 92 is a solid entry into this growing market. Community 92 sets itself apart from other works by focusing on motherhood and community, as well as by exploring the device of war as the apocalyptic event as opposed to natural disasters or epidemics. In addition,Community 92 starts at the beginning of the apocalyptic events, instead of years later, and has a tone of hope and resilience instead of fear and loneliness.
I hope to be able to read it soon.in the mean time, I’m keeping my fingers crossed! If you want to learn more about Catherine you can find her website here. In the meantime enjoy the photos and check her page for updates on this journey to being published!
